FIFA may move the play-off due to security reasons in Mexico

FIFA is considering relocating the intercontinental play-off matches for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers from Mexico to another country. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The reason cited is the worsening security situation in Mexico. According to a source from The Athletic, if security agencies and commercial partners continue to express concerns, the possibility of moving the matches elsewhere may be put on the agenda.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 26 to 31, and according to the initial plan, it was supposed to be held in stadiums in two Mexican cities. However, the complex situation in the country, especially the unrest following reports of the elimination of the drug cartel leader "El Mencho," including roadblocks and clashes, has intensified security concerns.
This situation could pose a significant problem not only for FIFA but also for fans, as tens of thousands have planned their trips, purchased tickets, and booked hotels.
If the matches are relocated, logistics and compensation issues will also come to the forefront. It is worth noting that the 2026 World Cup is scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
Additionally, the Uzbekistan national team is planned to play its first World Cup match against Colombia in Mexico. So far, FIFA has not made an official decision regarding the relocation of the play-off matches.
However, the main criterion for the organization is to ensure the safety of all teams, fans, and participants. If sufficient guarantees are provided in this regard, the tournament will proceed as planned.
Otherwise, the geography of the matches may change.
