During his visit to Saudi Arabia, US President Donald Trump made an important statement, announcing that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would participate in the upcoming negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey.
“Important negotiations are expected to take place in Turkey at the end of this week, possibly on Thursday. I believe good results can be achieved there. Marco Rubio will participate in these negotiations on behalf of the US,” Trump said at an event held in Riyadh. This was reported by the AFP agency.
Earlier, several media outlets had reported, citing their sources, that two representatives of Donald Trump – Kit Kellog and Steve Witkoff – would also participate in these negotiations. Additionally, Trump himself has not completely ruled out the possibility of visiting Turkey in person.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously proposed holding negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15. However, it is still unclear whether these negotiations will actually take place and in what format they will be conducted.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his readiness to meet personally with Vladimir Putin. However, Zelensky emphasized that he has no intention of engaging in dialogue with other Russian officials.
While the Russian side has confirmed that it will send its delegation to Istanbul, there has been no official information regarding Putin's personal participation so far.
Analysts believe that the US participation in these negotiations could play a significant role in resolving the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The involvement of a high-level politician like Marco Rubio is expected to give a new impetus to the negotiation process and facilitate effective communication between the parties.
Currently, the international community is awaiting official confirmations regarding the exact date of this meeting and the composition of the participants.
