The competition to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Europe is intensifying. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The semi-final matches of the qualifying play-off stage have ended and some teams have advanced to the final. Others were forced to prepare for upcoming competitions.
One of these matches was between the national teams of Ukraine and Sweden. Although the hosts wanted to win in front of their fans, they were defeated at the end of the game.
The match started very quickly. At the 6th minute after the game began, Gekeresh opened the scoring with a precise shot, putting the visitors ahead.
This goal disrupted the Ukrainian team's plans and put them under pressure. Sweden maintained their dominance in the second half as well.
At the 51st minute, Gekeresh scored his second goal, strengthening his team's advantage. At the 72nd minute, he completed a hat-trick by converting a penalty, deciding the final outcome of the game.
The Ukrainian team became more active in the final minutes. A goal by Ponomarenko in the 90th minute reduced the deficit, but it was not enough for a comeback.
According to experts, the Swedish team played disciplined and effectively throughout the game. Ukraine failed to fully capitalize on opportunities and made mistakes in defense.
Thus, the Swedish national team secured a confident victory and advanced to the play-off final. On March 31, they will compete in a decisive match against Poland at home to fight for a spot in the World Cup.
