Different rulings are being issued for the same situation in different fields

Two similar incidents in the English and Spanish leagues have once again intrigued football fans. Zamin.uz reported this.

Different rulings on identical situations on different pitches, especially in high-stakes games, directly affect teams' fates. Former Arsenal and Barcelona captain Thierry Henry expressed this view on Sky Sports.

He first recalled the episode in Madrid during the Atlético – Barcelona clash. After minimal contact on Eric García, the referee showed the French defender a straight red card.

Henry called the decision excessive: “Minimal contact, yet the player was sent off immediately. That incident changed the course of the game.”

According to him, such a ruling disrupts a team’s tactical plan and unfairly blames the player. The French expert then turned to the Manchester City – Arsenal match in England.

There, an almost identical situation occurred: Abdukodir Khusanov was involved in a similar challenge, but this time the referee took no action. “Different measures are applied to the same kind of episode.

How can this be explained?” Henry asked, voicing his concern. He stressed the need for uniform interpretation of the rules and opposed any ambiguity contrary to football’s logic.

“There is one rule; pitches may differ, but that must not justify variability. If the Madrid incident was a foul, the English one should be judged the same.

If the latter was deemed clean, the Spanish case should also go unpunished,” he said. Henry believes football is a contact sport and minor clashes are natural.

“I saw no foul in Khusanov’s case. But the red shown to García was an inexcusable mistake.

Such decisions become a heavy burden for clubs fighting for the title,” he added. Consequently, Barcelona had to continue the match a man down and dropped two points.

This, in turn, affected the standings. Meanwhile, Manchester City defeated Arsenal and maintained a three-point gap with the leaders.

If the Gunners win their upcoming matches, they can draw level with the pacesetters. Thus, different rulings on identical episodes cast doubt on football’s quality and sporting justice.

This problem highlights the need to refine the overall rules and tighten control over referee training. Otherwise, in every top-level dispute teams risk being unfairly blamed, and deserving results may never materialize.
