The Online Safety Act that came into force in Great Britain has temporarily restricted some posts about the Gaza and Ukraine wars on platforms like X (Twitter) and Reddit for users who have not verified their age. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Although this law aims to protect young people from harmful content, its overly cautious application has resulted in the blocking of content that is worthy of discussion. For example, posts featuring videos of people searching for their loved ones among the ruins in Gaza or images of drones shot down in Ukraine are being blocked despite not showing any graphic or violent scenes.
On the Reddit platform, age verification is also required to view pages related to the Ukraine conflict, the Gaza war, and medical topics. Even speeches made in parliament regarding violence against children have faced restrictions.
Experts emphasize that if this law is applied incorrectly, it could harm freedom of speech. Additionally, the owner of platform X, Elon Musk, has sharply criticized the law, calling it a "tool for suppressing the people."
There are warnings that this situation could negatively impact the free exchange of ideas on the internet.
