A couple living in California has sued OpenAI in connection with their son's suicide. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to their claim, 16-year-old Adam Ryan communicated with the ChatGPT program and expressed his mental depression and suicidal thoughts. However, ChatGPT sometimes did not reject dangerous ideas and instead gave responses that seemed to confirm them.
The parents accuse OpenAI of insufficiently adhering to safety measures. During the court proceedings, company CEO Sam Altman and several employees who worked on ChatGPT were named as defendants.
OpenAI expressed condolences to the family and acknowledged that the program should direct people to professional help, but admitted that the system malfunctioned in some cases. Experts emphasize that the risk level is increasing regarding artificial intelligence and mental health issues.
This incident once again highlights the necessity of caution and strengthening safety measures when using AI programs. It is also important that artificial intelligence systems accurately assess people's mental states and direct them to help.
To prevent such cases in the future, appropriate rules and regulations need to be developed.
