At the beginning of September, the United Kingdom's Home Office sent a new technical request to Apple. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Within the scope of this request, Apple is being asked to provide access to the encrypted iCloud backup data of British users. This was reported by Rozetked, citing information from the Financial Times.
In January 2025, the UK government announced a document envisioning global access to encrypted user data. Apple appealed this decision and, as a result, temporarily disabled the Advanced Data Protection feature, which protects end-to-end encrypted data in the UK.
In August, US National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard stated that the UK government withdrew this request due to pressure from the US. However, according to sources from the Financial Times, the US is currently not applying pressure, and the UK has resumed its plan.
The human rights organization Privacy International warns that creating access to data for only one country weakens the security of users worldwide. So far, neither Apple nor the UK Home Office has commented on this situation.
