A major project is being implemented in the city of Samarkand to protect the environment and develop renewable energy sources. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
A modern plant that generates electricity by incinerating waste is being built on a 15-hectare area belonging to the "Navro‘z" neighborhood citizens' assembly, located in the "Khushrav" fortress area of the city. Within the framework of this project, it is planned to process 1,500 tons of waste per day and produce approximately 240 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
In addition, the project will create between 150 and 200 new jobs. The project is being implemented based on cooperation agreements signed with the Waste Management and Circular Economy Development Agency under the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Uzbekistan and leading Chinese companies.
This initiative is planned to be gradually implemented not only in the Samarkand region but also in five other regions of the country. On March 24, 2024, by presidential decree, the "Measures for the Implementation of Investment Projects for Electricity Generation through the Incineration of Solid Household Waste" was adopted.
This decree aims to improve the ecological situation in the regions, introduce innovative technologies into the waste recycling system, and attract large investments. The Chinese company "Shanghai SUS Environment" is investing 150 million US dollars in the construction works in the Samarkand region.
The electricity produced by the plant will be supplied to the "O‘zenergosotish" joint-stock company under a guaranteed contract for 30 years. Additionally, long-term contracts have been concluded to ensure the continuous delivery and processing of waste (source: zamin.uz).
