The significant rise in criminal cases among students studying at higher education institutions in Uzbekistan was discussed at the 10th plenary session of the Senate. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to official data, in the first six months of this year, a total of 307 students from 102 universities were involved in various crimes. For comparison, in 2024, the number of crimes committed by students amounted to 761.
The incidents in the first half of this year indicate an increasing level of criminal activity. The majority of the crimes committed are related to road traffic accidents, theft, hooliganism, fraud, and bodily injuries.
From a geographical perspective, the highest number of violations were recorded in Tashkent city as well as in the Tashkent, Bukhara, Namangan, Andijan, Samarkand, Fergana, and Surxondaryo regions. Among universities, Tashkent State Transport University, Uzbekistan National University, Tashkent State Technical University, University of Information Technologies, and Tashkent State University of Economics held leading positions.
Experts emphasize that crimes often occur during students' free time in the study process, that is, between 08:00 and 16:00. This situation indicates insufficient control systems in educational institutions.
Additionally, senators noted serious shortcomings in student dormitories and their supervision. According to a resolution adopted in 2021, each student was supposed to be assigned a tutor, but this requirement is not being fulfilled in many universities.
It was also reported that corruption-related criminal cases have been initiated not only against students but also against officials related to the sector. This has led to an increase in public dissatisfaction and complaints against injustice.
At the end of the discussion, the Senate decided to send a parliamentary inquiry to the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovations, Qo‘ng‘irotboy Sharipov. This measure aims to prevent crime among students and address shortcomings in the system (source: zamin.uz).
