A proposal was introduced to extend the divorce period in the Family Code up to one year

In Uzbekistan, amendments are planned to the Family Code that would allocate more time for couples to reconcile before finalizing the divorce process. Zamin.uz reported on this matter.
This draft law was developed by the Committee for Family and Women's Issues and submitted for public discussion. Uzdaily.uz reported on this.
Under current rules, courts may grant up to six months for couples to resolve their disputes. The new proposal aims to extend this period to one year.
According to the authors, the existing procedure often treats the divorce process as a mere formality. In particular, marriages are frequently annulled through civil status registration bodies without fully examining the causes of conflict or possibilities for preserving the family.
The draft also places special emphasis on measures to protect children during the divorce process. Courts will be required to clearly determine with which parent minor children shall reside and specify their place of residence in the final ruling.
Furthermore, communication between parents living separately from the child will be regulated by official procedures. The draft law also revises rules regarding alimony payments.
Alimony funds collected for children raised in institutions are designated to be transferred to bank accounts opened in the child's name under the supervision of guardianship authorities. Additionally, except for cases involving domestic violence, divorce applications from couples married for less than one year will be considered under a special procedure.
These changes are intended to further strengthen family relationships and protect the interests of children. The draft law is expected to be further refined based on public opinion.
