The Senate debated a law protecting the rights of women and children

At the regular plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, a new law aimed at fundamentally improving the system for ensuring children's rights and protecting women and girls from harassment and violence was discussed. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This document serves as an important step in reforms to exalt human dignity in our society, strengthen the institution of the family, and legally guarantee the interests of layers of the population in need of social protection. Through the adopted changes, our national legislation is being further aligned with international standards.
The new law introduces the concept of the "best interests of the child" into the legal system of Uzbekistan. This means that whenever any state body or court makes a decision affecting a child's fate, it must first consider the child's well-being and safety.
According to the additions made to the Family Code, children will now have the full right to freely express their opinions whenever any issue related to their interests is considered within the family. This rule is of great importance in the personal development of minors and in preventing the violation of their rights.
At the same time, the mechanisms for socio-legal support for women and girls affected by harassment and violence have been significantly expanded. In particular, the National Agency for Social Protection has been granted the authority to file lawsuits in courts without paying state fees in order to protect the rights of victims.
Additionally, agency representatives will be able to participate directly in court hearings to protect the interests of the victimized party. This innovation increases the opportunities for women and girls to achieve fair justice.
Another important aspect regarding social guarantees is reflected in the law. According to it, when persons affected by harassment and violence are placed in special rehabilitation centers, their period of stay there—up to one month—serves as a basis for issuing a temporary disability certificate.
This measure serves to preserve the victims' workplaces and prevent the deterioration of their financial situation. Senate members unanimously approved the law, specifically recognizing its role in ensuring social justice in society.
