Peruvian judicial authorities have decided to detain the country's former president Martin Vizcarra for five months on charges of bribery. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This was reported by the Al Jazeera news agency. Judge Jorge Chaves, during the court session on August 13, emphasized the high risk of Vizcarra fleeing and issued the arrest order.
According to information, Vizcarra is suspected of bribery during his time as governor of the Moquegua region 11 years ago. The former president denies the charges and considers this case to be political persecution.
He plans to participate in the 2026 presidential elections. Initially, in June, the court rejected the request to detain Vizcarra, but after the prosecution filed an appeal, the risk of flight was cited as the reason.
At a time when Peru is troubled by corruption and political crises, Vizcarra became the fifth former president to be imprisoned in recent years.
