The residents of the Vila Nova neighborhood in São Paulo, Brazil, lived under the threat of relocation for many years. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In 2006, the government declared this area an ecological protection zone and planned to relocate hundreds of families. However, the local community opposed this decision.
Led by a woman named Lia Esperanka, the community began cleaning up waste and creating a large garden. This garden became not only a place for growing vegetables and fruits but also a space that united the community.
Currently, the neighborhood residents grow their own food here and earn additional income. Additionally, vocational courses for women, a kitchen, and a small library were established.
The Vila Nova Esperança project gained recognition throughout Brazil thanks to the garden and received various awards. As a result, the government provided essential services such as water, electricity, and roads to the area.
Nevertheless, the threat of relocation still exists for some families. But the neighborhood residents strive to preserve their homes through the garden.
Lia Esperanka says, “I did not do this alone; it was accomplished with the strength of the entire community.” This example highlights the importance of the dedication and unity of the neighborhood residents.
