Eight people died as a result of a plague epidemic spreading in Bukkuyum district of Zamfara state, located in northwestern Nigeria. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This situation is causing great concern among the local population and healthcare professionals. With the epidemic intensifying, it has been confirmed that over 200 people have contracted the disease in 11 villages.
Local authorities have officially announced this. Currently, the lack of medical assistance and security issues are further complicating the situation.
This poses a serious threat to public health and the control of the epidemic. Plague is an infectious disease transmitted through contaminated and harmful water.
In many regions of Nigeria, especially rural areas and city outskirts, the lack of clean drinking water frequently leads to outbreaks of the disease. As a result, the population often faces infection, creating conditions for the epidemic to spread.
The epidemic has particularly intensified in the villages of Nasarawa-Burkullu, Gurusu, and Adabku. Due to insufficient initial medical care in these areas, many patients are forced to be treated at home.
Muhammad Djibchi, the elder of Gurusu village, told Reuters agency in an interview that currently 21 people have been hospitalized, and three people died because they were not delivered to Nasarawa hospital in time. He emphasized that the population is worried about this situation.
Additionally, attacks by armed criminal groups are increasing in Zamfara state. The local population refers to these groups as "bandits."
Over the past months, violence has sharply increased, making farming and road traffic dangerous. These groups threaten villagers and travelers by intimidating them, demanding money, and using various forms of torture.
Currently, local authorities and healthcare workers are focusing on ensuring security, strengthening preventive measures, providing clean drinking water, and promptly organizing initial medical care. These measures are crucial in preventing the spread of the plague epidemic and protecting the lives of the population.
