From January to July 2025, the population of Kazakhstan increased by 124.5 thousand people, or 0.61 percent. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Thus, the total population of the country reached 20 million 407.8 thousand people as of August 1, according to the National Statistics Committee of Kazakhstan. It was noted that the population growth rate has slowed compared to previous years.
Moreover, in more than half of the country's regions, a decrease in population is observed due to migration flows. Five regions with above-average growth rates were identified in the republic: the city of Astana (3.92 percent), the city of Shymkent (1.99 percent), the city of Almaty (1.46 percent), Almaty region (1.34 percent), and Mangystau region (1.11 percent).
Additionally, the population increased in Aktobe, Atyrau, Akmola, and Kyzylorda regions, but their growth rates were below the national average. A population decline was observed in the remaining regions.
The largest decreases occurred in North Kazakhstan, Abai, and Ulytau regions. In the North and East Kazakhstan regions, birth rates were lower than death rates, resulting in natural population decline.
In other regions, natural population growth continues. Migration indicators were positive only in five regions.
Among them are three major cities – Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent – as well as Almaty and Mangystau regions. In these areas, the number of arrivals exceeded the number of departures.
In other regions, the number of departures exceeded arrivals. The urban population grew by 1.2 percent from January to July, reaching 12 million 926 thousand people.
The rural population decreased by 0.38 percent, totaling 7 million 482 thousand people. As a result, the share of urban residents reached 63.3 percent, while rural residents accounted for 36.7 percent.
Additionally, as of July 1, 2025, the population of Tajikistan exceeded 10.6 million. From January to June, 116.2 thousand newborns and 17.2 thousand deceased citizens were registered.
It was also reported that among them were 800 children under one year old.
