A serious incident occurred in Zambia last week. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Two fortune-tellers who attempted to kill the country's president, Hakainde Hichilema, were sentenced to two years in prison. According to police information, 43-year-old Leonard Phiri and 42-year-old Justin Kandungede were arrested at a hotel in Lusaka at the end of 2024.
A hotel employee heard strange noises and reported it to the police. During the investigation, a live chameleon, a part of an unknown animal's tail, 12 bottles of medicinal substances, and other magical items were found in their room.
The fortune-tellers' goal was to cast a spell on the Zambian president and harm him. This task was ordered by Nelson Banda, the brother of local politician Emmanuel Banda, who paid them 2 million Zambian kwacha.
During the trial, the accused admitted their guilt. Since 1914, Zambia has had a law prohibiting witchcraft.
According to this law, demonstrating magical abilities to frighten or harm people is considered fortune-telling, and such a crime is punishable by up to three years in prison. Similarly, a comparable case was recorded in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
Members of a criminal group were accused of sorcery involving 110 people, and it was found that they violently interfered with their lives. These events highlight the global seriousness of issues related to fortune-telling and political security.
It was reminded that such incidents can always pose a danger to society.
