According to The New York Times, Israeli officials planned to strike Iran's nuclear facilities in May 2024, but U.S. President Donald Trump did not support this plan and preferred the path of diplomatic negotiations.
Sources indicate that there was high confidence on the Israeli side regarding Trump's support for the attack. This was because U.S. military and logistical assistance was crucial in the strike plans: both during the attack and in responding to a potential counter-strike from Iran.
However, contrary to all expectations, Trump firmly put an end to the matter after a meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu:
"No! We choose the path of negotiations."
Trump's Strategy: Not War, But Negotiation
This position of the U.S. has caused certain uncertainty and even discontent within the Israeli government. As Tehran continues its nuclear program, it was believed that a military strike could delay it for at least a year.
Washington, however, expressed concerns that such an action could drag the U.S. into a new, extensive war. For this reason, the White House deemed seeking a diplomatic solution with Iran as a priority.
