Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky stated that he is ready to engage in any form of negotiations with Russia only after the complete cessation of hostilities on the territory of the country. He mentioned this during a meeting with journalists.
President Zelensky emphasized that there should be no obstacles or "dead ends" in the negotiation process. At the same time, he reiterated that the Crimean peninsula was illegally occupied by Russia and that he does not recognize this.
"Crimea is our land, it belongs to the people of Ukraine. There can be no other discussion on this matter, as it contradicts our Constitution," Zelensky explained.
Zelensky also reminded that only countries that are members of the NATO alliance have the right to veto regarding Ukraine's NATO membership.
The Ukrainian leader also commented on reports that the U.S. might withdraw from the peace negotiation process.
"We do not want the United States to withdraw its support. This is not only about assistance but also about intelligence information, protection from ballistic attacks, and the lives of our people. I believe that losing a strategic partner like the United States would be a significant loss. If America withdraws from the negotiations, it will not be a good sign. Therefore, we trust that U.S. President Donald Trump will continue cooperation with Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia," said Vladimir Zelensky.
It should be noted that U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope on April 20 that Russia and Ukraine would reach a peace agreement "within this week." He announced that he would reveal his plan to ensure peace in Ukraine within the next three days. According to some insider information, the draft plan may involve Ukraine handing over 20 percent of its territory "de facto" to Russia.
The peace plan proposes deploying international peacekeeping forces to Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire. The monitoring will be carried out by a special joint commission composed of representatives from neutral countries.
Previously, Ukrainian President Zelensky had also proposed that Russia cease long-range strikes on civilian targets in the country for 30 days, with the possibility of extending this period later. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that this proposal would be studied and that bilateral negotiations could be conducted on this matter.
"This issue requires serious study, and it can be addressed in a bilateral negotiation format," Putin said.
Currently, the global community is closely watching how peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will progress.
