Several countries in the Caribbean basin and the African continent are demanding accountability from the United Kingdom for injustices during the era of slavery and colonialism. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to "Reuters," members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have planned to send a special delegation to London to discuss this issue. The delegation will meet with members of the British government and parliament to discuss the severe historical injustices of the slavery period and their current socio-economic consequences.
The reparations plan expected to be presented by CARICOM includes several demands. Among them are a full and official apology, expansion of educational programs, cancellation of national debts, and allocation of financial compensation.
Additionally, some countries belonging to the African Union are also working on demanding reparations from Europe for the slave trade from the 15th to the 19th centuries. According to data, more than 12.5 million Africans were forcibly taken and sold as slaves during that period.
However, resistance to the issue of reparations is also increasing. Some European leaders emphasize that modern governments cannot be held responsible for past mistakes and are reluctant to make official decisions on this matter.
At the same time, according to the results of a survey conducted in 2025 by "The Repair Campaign," 85 percent of Britons were unaware that their country forcibly relocated over three million Africans to the Caribbean region in its history. This indicates a lack of sufficient information about past events.
