The 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced that he only intends to serve two terms in the White House. He stated this during an interview with NBC television journalists.
Recently, various speculations have emerged in the media and on social networks about Trump's potential candidacy for a third term. These rumors intensified especially after the Trump Organization, associated with the president, released special red caps with the inscription "Trump 2028" for sale in April.
However, the president dismissed the possibility of running for a third term. "I will be president for eight years, I will serve two terms. This has always been very important to me. Many people are asking me to run for a third term; the number of these requests has never been this high before. But I know that it is not legally possible, and I will not do it," Trump said.
In his interview, Trump referred to the remaining term of his presidency as "four wonderful years" and emphasized that he plans to hand over power to a worthy individual, especially a "great Republican," at the end of it.
At the same time, when responding to a question about the future of the political movement "Make America Great Again," Trump indicated that there are many talented candidates who could continue the movement. He named prominent political figures such as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the country's Vice President Jay DeVance as potential successors.
"Sitting here right now, I could talk about 10, 15, or even 20 people who could lead this movement," Trump described. He refrained from revealing specific names, hinting at the emergence of a new generation of Republicans for future presidential runs.
For reference, according to the 22nd amendment of the U.S. Constitution, no person can be elected president more than twice. To run for a third term, an amendment to this provision of the Constitution would need to be made, which is considered politically very complicated.
Thus, with this statement, Trump clarified all questions regarding his candidacy for the presidency and sent a clear signal to his supporters. This limited the politician's potential participation in the 2028 elections and laid the groundwork for a new political landscape to emerge in the future.
