Cambridge scientists: How do social networks affect the mental health of adolescents?
Today, social networks have become an integral part of our lives. But how does the time spent on these networks affect the mental health of adolescents? To answer this question, scientists from Cambridge University conducted a comprehensive study.

They found that young people suffering from mental illnesses spend significantly more time on social networks compared to their healthy peers. This is particularly evident in adolescents with conditions related to internal emotions, such as depression and anxiety.

The study involved 3,340 young participants aged 11 to 19, and their behaviors on social networks and mental health were evaluated from a scientific perspective. The scientific article on this topic was published in the prestigious journal Nature Human Behaviour (NHB).

It was revealed that adolescents with psychological problems spend an average of 50 minutes more per day on social networks. Additionally, they often compare themselves to others and are dissatisfied with the number of friends and followers on social networks. This, in turn, can negatively affect their mood and worsen their mental state.

According to the researchers, factors such as "likes," comments, and the number of friends observed on social networks lead to increased feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, and symptoms of depression among adolescents. Social comparison results in feelings of rejection and insecurity, which negatively impacts their conscious lives.

"This study does not determine cause and effect, but it confirms that adolescents with psychological problems behave differently on social networks. These young people face difficulties in finding their place in the online environment," says the lead author of the study, Luiza Fassi.

Scientists believe that problems related to mental health affect adolescents' behaviors in the online environment, and in turn, excessive time spent on social networks can further deteriorate their mental health.

Therefore, experts are urging parents and educators to monitor adolescents' online activities, engage in open communication with them, and seek psychological help when necessary. Because social networks can be beneficial when used correctly and moderately, but it is becoming clear that when left unchecked, they can pose serious risks to adolescents' mental well-being.

Thus, it is more important than ever to strengthen efforts to monitor time spent on social networks and maintain the mental health of young people. The collaboration of family, school, and society in this regard is of great significance.
