In hot summer days, using a refrigerator becomes not only a convenience but also a necessity for many households. This was reported by Upl.uz.
However, as emphasized by agronomy and food technology specialists, cooling products does not always guarantee their freshness. For some products, low temperatures and high humidity can lead to a deterioration in taste and nutritional value, as well as rapid spoilage.
Analyses show that improper storage is one of the main causes of food waste. Below is a list of products that should not be stored in the refrigerator.
Storing bananas in a cold place accelerates the darkening process of their peel and negatively affects the internal structure of the fruit. This situation leads to the breakdown of complex carbohydrates, altering the taste and chemical composition of the banana.
It is advisable to store bananas at room temperature, in a place protected from direct sunlight. For potatoes, low temperatures lead to the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugar forms.
This changes the taste of the product, making it sweeter and more watery. Additionally, cooking potatoes at high temperatures can produce harmful acrylamide.
Therefore, it is recommended to store potatoes in a dry, dark, cool, and well-ventilated place. Tomatoes are particularly sensitive to cold, and at temperatures below +12 degrees, their ripening process stops, and their taste and aroma are lost.
Cold temperatures damage the texture of tomato skin and flesh, reducing the quality of the product. It is better to store tomatoes at room temperature, in a single layer, for example, in ceramic or glass containers.
Storing olive oil in the refrigerator causes it to thicken and crystallize. This process deteriorates the taste and beneficial properties of the oil.
The best storage place is a dark kitchen cabinet away from heat. Storing onions and garlic in the refrigerator can lead to rot and mold due to high humidity.
Additionally, onions can sprout early in the cold. It is advisable to store these products in a dry, well-ventilated place at room temperature, such as in nets or woven bundles.
Fruits like bananas, apples, and tomatoes release ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening of nearby fruits and vegetables. Therefore, it is recommended to store them separately from ethylene-sensitive products like cucumbers and leafy greens.
