The Portuguese football season started with the Super Cup match. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
In it, the best two teams of the previous season – Sporting and Benfica – faced each other. In the early minutes of the match, Sporting players managed to launch a quick attack.
Konrad Harder made a counter-attack at speed and passed the ball into the penalty area. There, Pedro Gonçalves sent the ball towards the goal in a struggle with the defender.
However, the goal was disallowed after the referee identified an offside situation with the help of the VAR system. At the beginning of the second half, Benfica player Richard Rios seized the ball in the opponent's penalty area and passed it to Vangelis Pavlidis.
Pavlidis sent a precise shot from about 15 meters down into the far corner, leaving the goalkeeper stranded. Thus, the score was opened – Benfica took the lead.
During the match, Sporting forward Harder failed to score several times in one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper. Pavlidis also approached the opponent's penalty area and took a shot, but the goalkeeper showed his skills.
The Sporting goalkeeper made a mistake in catching a ball delivered from a corner, but Benfica defender Nicolás Otamendi could not direct the ball into the goal. In another instance, Sporting player Fransishku Trinkan took a shot, but the goalkeeper acted in time.
The only goal of the match was scored by Benfica player Vangelis Pavlidis. As a result, Benfica became the Super Cup holder.
The game took place at the Algarve Stadium in Faro.
