Famous commentator Gennady Orlov expressed his thoughts on the possibility of tightening restrictions on legionnaires in the Russian Premier League. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
Currently, the "13+8" system is in effect, meaning that a club can have 13 local players and 8 legionnaires on its roster. According to the new proposal, this format may be replaced by a "10+5" system.
Under this system, each team will be allowed to register 10 legionnaires for the season and have 5 legionnaires on the field at the same time. In Orlov's opinion, tightening restrictions on the number of legionnaires will create additional difficulties for Russian clubs in returning to European competitions.
He states: "Our teams will struggle to participate in European competitions after a long break. If we reduce the number of legionnaires again, what will the result be?
We still cannot find a central defender from the national team. There are no Russian central defenders," Orlov emphasizes.
It is known that sanctions against the Russian Football Union have been in place for over three and a half years. Earlier, the head of the Russian Football Union, Alexander Dyukov, stated that these sanctions could be lifted by the end of 2025.
For this reason, the issue of the legionnaire limit remains a pressing topic for Russian football.
