The contract of Croatian star Luka Modric, who has been working at Madrid's "Real" club since 2012 and has played a key role in the team's biggest achievements over the last decade, will expire on June 30 of this year. The club's management had previously intended to end the collaboration with the 39-year-old player.
However, the factor that fundamentally changed the situation was the future head coach of the "whites," Xabi Alonso. According to Marca, Alonso was impressed by the experienced playmaker's physical condition and level of play in the last season and asked the management to extend Modric's contract.
Modric has no intention of stopping yet
The captain of the Croatian national team has dreamed of finishing his career exactly at "Real" for many years. Although the player is approaching 40 years old, he demonstrated that he can still play at a high level in crucial matches for the team during the current season.
Alonso's confidence — the beginning of a new chapter
Modric has also agreed to significantly reduce his salary to stay for another year at his favorite club. He will only be offered a one-year contract. At the same time, during the World Championship between clubs (June 15 - July 13), Xabi Alonso intends to utilize Modric. This tournament could be the last international test for the 39-year-old player in the "whites" squad.
