The limit on the number of legionnaires in Russian football will be changed starting next year. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
According to the Telegraf channel "Insights from Karpa," the new limit will come into effect in the 2026/2027 season. Currently, the limit for the number of legionnaires in the Russian Premier League is 13+8, meaning that a maximum of 13 foreign players can be on the roster for the season, and no more than 8 can be on the field at the same time.
The Russian Ministry of Sports is proposing to introduce a new limit, which envisions 10 foreign players on the roster for the season and no more than 5 on the field. Alternatively, the Russian Football Union supports a gradual reduction policy.
According to this, in the 2026/2027 season, the limit will be 10+7, in the 2027/2028 season it will be 10+6, and in the 2028/2029 season it will be 10+5. These changes are being implemented with the aim of developing the country's football and creating more opportunities for local players.
The final decision and specific numbers have not yet been confirmed, but the new regulations are expected to be introduced soon.
