A federal judge in Oakland dismissed a lawsuit filed by entrepreneur Elon Musk against OpenAI, the company he helped found, according to Zamin.uz.

As stated in the court ruling, the billionaire raised his objections to the organization he helped create too late. After a hearing lasting less than two hours, the panel of judges unanimously reached this conclusion.

This legal proceeding is being regarded as one of the most significant judicial disputes in the modern technology world. In his 2024 lawsuit, Musk accused OpenAI leadership—CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman—of violating the original agreements.

According to Musk’s claims, the project was initially established as a nonprofit organization intended to serve humanity’s interests, but later, after accepting billions of dollars in investments from major partners like Microsoft, it transformed into a profit-driven business. The entrepreneur pointed out that he had contributed $38 million to the initiative and was subsequently excluded from governance after the company’s structure changed, which he cited as his main objection.

OpenAI representatives, however, emphasized in court that Musk’s claims were entirely baseless. They argued that the billionaire only voiced his concerns after achieving substantial financial gains in the artificial intelligence market.

During the eleven-day trial, both sides attempted to present evidence accusing the other of misconduct. Ultimately, the court found that Musk had failed to bring his claims in a timely manner.

For reference, OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit organization by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and other entrepreneurs. Musk left the board of directors in 2018 due to a conflict of interest.

Later, in 2019, the company created a for-profit subsidiary to attract significant investments. Today, OpenAI continues to evolve amid intense competition in the AI sector with rivals such as Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Musk’s own xAI company.
