China has officially launched the world’s first underwater data center powered by offshore wind energy. This was reported by Zamin.uz.

The unique project, located near the Shanghai coast, has a total value of $226 million. Construction began in June 2025 and was completed by October of the same year.

Following successful tests in February, the technological facility has begun operating at full capacity, as reported by international tech publications.

Situated at an estimated depth of 35 meters below sea level, the center has a power capacity of 24 megawatts and can accommodate nearly 2,000 servers. The facility also includes high-performance graphics processing units designed for artificial intelligence computations, support for fifth-generation network technologies, and processing of large-scale data.

The system’s key advantage lies in its use of natural seawater for cooling instead of conventional cooling units, which allows for efficient heat distribution and significantly reduces electricity consumption.

The project is connected to offshore wind farms, enabling the data center to be powered entirely by renewable energy sources and reducing the load on the general urban power grid.

However, implementing such technology presents unique challenges. Underwater equipment must withstand high pressure and the corrosive effects of saltwater.

For this reason, the entire system is hermetically sealed and equipped with advanced redundancy and backup systems that allow for remote management.

This achievement is expected to mark the beginning of a new era in the development of eco-friendly and energy-efficient digital infrastructure in the future.
