Microsoft signs new agreement to reduce carbon emissions

Microsoft has taken the next step in its environmental protection efforts, as reported by Zamin.uz.
The company has signed an agreement with BioCirc startup to reduce carbon emissions by 650,000 metric tons. While the volume of this deal is not exceptionally large, it serves as an important signal for industry specialists.
In the past month, variously in the public media that the technology giant had halted financing for new carbon removal projects. However, the new agreement demonstrates that these rumors were unfounded.
According to BioCirc representatives, the agreement was formalized in May of this year. Currently, Microsoft controls nearly ninety percent of the global carbon removal credit market.
Therefore, every decision made by the corporation shapes the future of young companies operating in this field. Melani Nakagava, the company’s head of sustainability, clarified that the program has not been halted; on the contrary, its implementation approach is being refined to achieve stated goals more quickly.
In implementing the new project, BioCirc will utilize the capabilities of five biogas plants. These facilities process agricultural waste using specialized equipment to produce methane and carbonate hydrate gases.
During the process, the separated carbonate hydrate is captured and stored in secure underwater geological formations. The produced methane gas is used for electricity generation.
This method helps prevent the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. However, Microsoft’s controversial activities in the field of artificial intelligence are somewhat complicating the implementation of its environmental plans.
To ensure continuous power supply for its data processing centers, the company is upgrading a large power station in the state of Texas. Since this project operates on natural gas, the amount of harmful emissions it produces could significantly exceed the reductions achieved through the agreement with BioCirc.
Company leadership has taken on the obligation to remove more carbon from the atmosphere by 2030 than is emitted. Given the growing demand for electricity driven by AI technologies, Microsoft is expected to further increase its purchases in carbon removal to maintain ecological balance.
This, in turn, will further drive demand for new technological solutions in the sector.
