The Pope Calls for Protecting the Human Person in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

On Monday, Pope Leo XIV issued his first official statement, which was reported by Zamin.uz.
This extensive document, dedicated to protecting human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence, analyzes serious challenges facing humanity alongside modern technologies. In particular, it highlights social inequality, armed conflicts, the weakening of democratic values, and the concentration of power in the hands of political elites.
According to widely reported information in international technological publications, the Pope, in preparing this statement, collaborated with experts in the field and emphasized that placing control over technological processes in the hands of a limited group runs contrary to the common good.
In his view, when such immense power is concentrated in the hands of a few individuals, it leads to a loss of transparency and escapes societal oversight. As a result, there is a risk of people falling into a new kind of darkness, information being distorted, and social stratification intensifying.
The statement also issues a serious warning that artificial intelligence technologies could further amplify the influence of those who possess economic resources and vast amounts of data. Ruling circles could exploit these opportunities to steer information flows in their favor and interfere with democratic processes.
This release comes at a time when legal documents are being debated in leading countries around the world regarding bringing artificial intelligence models under state control. Pope Leo XIV called for halting the intense race in the field of artificial intelligence and refusing to grant any entity the right to unchecked technical supremacy.
According to him, computational algorithms and data sets must not become tools serving geopolitical or commercial interests. The growing influence of major technology company leaders on politics today further complicates the situation.
As legal scholars and experts emphasize, false information and fabricated images spread through artificial intelligence are eroding our ability to discern the truth. Efforts to control consciousness through the collection and processing of personal data pose a serious threat to freedom of thought.
Therefore, technological progress must serve human dignity and the common good.
