Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a strategic decision that could bring major changes to the video game industry. This was reported by Zamin.uz.

According to the company's official statement, the release of new projects designed for PlayStation game consoles on physical discs will be completely discontinued. This step indicates a full transition to digital format in the global gaming market, which industry experts view as the end of the era of physical media carriers.

According to the plan, starting from January 2028, all new games released for the PlayStation platform will be distributed exclusively in digital format. Sony explains this decision by changing consumer preferences and the sharp shift in market conditions.

Currently, the majority of gamers prefer to download games directly via the internet rather than purchasing them from stores. Sony representatives emphasize that demand for digital products has exceeded interest in physical discs by several times.

This trend is noticeable not only in developed countries but also in emerging markets such as Uzbekistan. Among local gaming enthusiasts, purchases through the PlayStation Store network and the use of special subscription services are becoming increasingly common.

After the specified date, all new projects will be sold only through digital stores or via special codes provided by official retailers. This change will reduce the costs of developing and distributing games while also allowing users to access new products immediately upon release.

It is important to note that this innovation does not apply to games released or scheduled for release before the end of 2027. Physical copies of older games will continue to be sold in retail outlets, and their support will not be discontinued.

Sony promises to maintain the opportunity for users to choose how to purchase games until a specified date. The company now intends to focus its main efforts not on producing and distributing physical copies, but on developing modern methods of accessing content.

This will contribute to the creation of new conveniences in areas such as cloud computing technologies and increasing download speeds. Sony's main goal is to provide gamers with high-level technical capabilities.

According to experts, Sony's decision could serve as an example for other major players in the industry. In the future, the production of gaming devices without disc drives may become the norm.

This, in turn, is expected to positively affect the external appearance of devices and potentially reduce their cost.
