A new draft law has been put forward in Uzbekistan to restrict marriages with minors and marriages between relatives. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This draft aims to protect the rights of women and children. According to the draft law, marriages between relatives, namely uncles, aunts, and their nephews and nieces, as well as cousins, are prohibited.
However, this ban does not apply to adopted or stepchildren. Additionally, in cases such as pregnancy or childbirth, the marriage age may be reduced by one year by the district or city mayor.
Penalties for those who marry minors will be significantly increased. Under the new regulation, fines for such cases may range from 20,600,000 to 41,200,000 Uzbek soms, or 240–300 hours of mandatory community service may be imposed.
Furthermore, up to two years of corrective labor may also be applied. Under current legislation, fines range from 8,240,000 to 12,360,000 soms, and community service is up to 240 hours.
These changes are aimed at more effectively protecting the rights of children and women. Source: One.uz.
