German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sharply criticized Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to him, the current situation can no longer be accepted. This statement was made at the traditional summer press conference held in Berlin.
In his speech, Chancellor Merz emphasized that Israel's actions towards civilians in Gaza are contrary to humanitarian norms. The German government is putting forward two main demands to resolve the conflict.
The first is to cease fire; the second is to provide full and effective humanitarian assistance to the population of Gaza. Friedrich Merz stated that he is maintaining regular personal contacts with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on this matter.
Germany feels the responsibility placed upon it and announced that if the Israeli government is ready for cooperation, Berlin is prepared to provide additional assistance. The chancellor also openly expressed his opposition to the idea of canceling the European Union's cooperation agreement with Israel.
In his opinion, it is necessary not to close the door to negotiations, as this allows for diplomatic solutions. Friedrich Merz pointed out that comparing Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip to Russia's invasion of Ukraine is incorrect.
According to him, Moscow is attacking an independent state in violation of international law, while Israel is defending itself. Equating these two situations is absolutely wrong.
Merz's statement demonstrates that German foreign policy is cautious yet committed to fundamental principles. At a time when the tragic events in Gaza are causing concern in the global community, the German chancellor's call for peace is of significant importance.
Currently, this statement is causing extensive discussions in the international political arena. Germany's position may initiate a new political phase not only for the European Union but also for the UN and other international organizations.
