The official letter sent to the Nobel Peace Committee by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has sparked new discussions in global politics. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In this appeal, the contribution of former US President Donald Trump to international peace is particularly emphasized, and a proposal was made to nominate him for the Nobel Prize in Peace. The letter was sent on August 7, 2025, in which Hun Manet introduced himself as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and acknowledged Trump's historical and serious efforts in promoting peace.
In his letter, Hun Manet described Trump as a leader with political intelligence and highly valued his mediating role in resolving the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. Additionally, Trump's achievements in ensuring peace and stability in complex regions across Southeast Asia and the world were noted.
As a result of armed clashes that occurred on July 24, 2025, at the Thailand-Cambodia border, many casualties were reported, and thousands of people were evacuated. On July 29, delegations from both countries met in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, and reached an agreement to cease hostilities.
On the eve of these negotiations, Donald Trump made a public statement indicating that if the conflict was not halted, the US would stop economic cooperation, thereby contributing to achieving a peace agreement. Cambodia's initiative has been assessed differently on the international stage.
Some experts consider Hun Manet's actions aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations with the US, while others support it as a practical step towards peace. At the same time, the debates surrounding Trump's nomination have once again drawn public attention to how the Nobel Prize is shaped as a political choice.
Now all eyes are on the day when the award winner will be announced in Oslo. Throughout history, peace prizes have been awarded under various controversies, so how this nomination will be evaluated will be revealed in the coming days.
