It has been announced that the United States and Russia have reached a new agreement on providing security guarantees to Ukraine. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to Steven Witkoff, the US President’s special envoy, the next phase of the agreement depends on Ukraine’s consent. At a press conference held on August 16, Witkoff emphasized the importance of how much this agreement is approved by the Ukrainian government.
He said: “Right now, everything depends on Ukraine.” Additionally, the issue is planned to be discussed during a meeting between US and Ukrainian leaders Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky.
French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and other European leaders have also been invited to the meeting at the White House on August 18. In an interview with Fox News after negotiations with Putin, Donald Trump stated that the agreement is close and emphasized that the process will continue once official consent is obtained from Ukraine.
In his opinion, “everything depends on President Zelensky.” According to The New York Times, Trump proposed to European leaders to hand over the entire Donbass region to Russia.
If this agreement is implemented, Europe and the US will have the opportunity to reconsider their strategy regarding Ukraine’s future. Important decisions regarding armed actions in Ukraine are expected to be made following this meeting.
