During an immigration raid conducted in the U.S. state of Georgia, more than 300 South Korean workers were detained. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
They were temporarily working at a factory construction site owned by Hyundai and LG companies. According to the workers, armed officers handcuffed them and took them onto buses.
U.S. officials emphasized that the workers were employed on incorrect visas. However, they were later allowed to leave the country without punishment.
This agreement allows the workers to have the opportunity to work in the U.S. again in the future. The detained workers stated that they were kept in cold and harsh conditions.
They reported that the drinking water was contaminated, and many of them were left without beds, forced to sleep on tables. The South Korean government has launched an investigation into the human rights violations.
This incident has strained relations between the U.S. and South Korea, as recently the Seoul government had signed an agreement for major investment in the U.S.
Some of the workers have expressed that due to psychological trauma, they do not wish to return to the U.S.
