On the night of Tuesday, September 23, 2023, the Ukrainian armed forces employed an unusual tactic during large-scale drone attacks directed at Russian territories. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The RBK news agency, citing sources close to the Russian Ministry of Defense, revealed that alongside drones, a large number of balloons were also used in these attacks. One of the sources told journalists that there were very many balloons, but their movements were not clearly observed.
The use of such a large number of balloons during drone attacks is an unprecedented occurrence. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense did not provide any information regarding the balloons in its official statement.
According to the Ministry's message on Telegram, 69 Ukrainian drones were destroyed in one night. These drones were shot down from midnight until 7:00 AM Moscow time in the regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Moscow Oblast, as well as Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, and Crimea.
A dangerous situation also arose around Moscow. Reports indicated that more than 40 drones approached the capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin repeatedly reported to the public about the actions of air defense units during the air raid and announced that security measures in the capital's sky had been strengthened. Thus, the mass use of balloons by the Ukrainian side is further complicating aerial confrontations in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Experts believe that this new tactic makes it more difficult to detect attacks in advance and take countermeasures.
