On September 28, the Taliban movement in Afghanistan announced the release of American citizen Amir Amiriy. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The released individual was handed over to Adam Beller, the United States President's envoy for hostage affairs. According to information, representatives from Washington held negotiations with the Taliban earlier this month regarding a prisoner exchange.
There is no precise information about when and under what circumstances Amiriy was detained, but sources indicate that he had been in custody since December 2024. After being freed, Amiriy headed home and underwent a medical examination in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed gratitude to the Qatari government for their assistance in the process. He also recalled President Donald Trump's words: "We will not stop until every American unjustly held is returned home."
This event may contribute to improving relations between the two sides.
