The Nobel Committee announced at a ceremony held in Oslo that the 2025 Peace Prize will be awarded to Venezuelan political figure Maria Corina Machado. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes, the prize is awarded for her tireless efforts to defend the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people. A total of 338 candidates were submitted for this year's prize.
Among them, 244 were individuals and 94 were organizations. Last year, the number of candidates was 286, including 197 individuals and 89 organizations.
The highest number was recorded in 2016, with 376 candidates. In recent years, Nobel Peace Prize laureates have included individuals and organizations known for their work in human rights, press freedom, and nuclear disarmament.
For example, in 2024, the Council of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors was awarded, while in 2023, Iranian women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi was recognized. In 2022, Russia's Memorial organization, the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties, and Belarusian Ales Bialiatski were acknowledged for their human rights work.
In 2021, Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa were awarded for defending press freedom and democracy. The Nobel Prizes were established in the fields of physiology, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace, and have been awarded since 1901 based on Alfred Nobel's will.
This award given to Maria Corina Machado once again confirms the global significance of the struggle for democracy and civic values in Latin America.
