The prison system in Norway is facing a serious problem. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
There is a shortage of available space in correctional facilities across the country, with no accommodation currently allocated for 560 inmates. This situation is explained by several factors.
Three prisons in the cities of Oslo, Sarpsborg, and Drammen were closed because they did not meet fire safety requirements. Additionally, there has been an increase in staff shortages in correctional institutions.
Some employees have moved to other government agencies, while others have left their jobs due to low salaries and difficult working conditions. Officials are considering various measures to address the problem.
Among these are proposals to house two inmates per cell and to expand the possibility of early release for certain offenders. However, local experts emphasize that these decisions may negatively affect the effectiveness of the penal system.
At the same time, the government is also exploring plans to build new prisons or establish temporary facilities. Comprehensive solutions are necessary to resolve the issue.
