A nuclear shelter for citizens is planned to be constructed in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The Korea Herald reported on this. The new building will be constructed beneath a multi-story residential complex located in the Garak-don neighborhood of the Songpa-gu district of the city.
This project is being implemented to strengthen the safety of the country's citizens and to ensure an effective response to nuclear and chemical threats. The government and the Seoul Housing and Community Corporation plan to complete the bunker construction by 2028.
The bunker will be located on the third basement level and will be part of a new residential complex that includes 16 multi-story apartment buildings. Its main purpose is to protect citizens from nuclear, biological, and chemical attacks.
The underground shelter will occupy an area of 2,147 square meters and will have the capacity to accommodate 1,020 people simultaneously. The bunker will be equipped with modern ventilation, water supply, sewage, and backup systems.
This will allow citizens to live independently for up to 14 days in an emergency. Interestingly, during peacetime, the bunker will serve as a public fitness center and will transform into a protective facility when a threat arises.
The city administration explains this initiative as a necessity to update the civil defense system in response to global threats. They emphasize that modern dangers differ fundamentally from traditional threats, which increases the importance of shelters.
The bunker construction is an important part of the "Seoul Defense–2030" program. Under this program, the government aims to create a network of shelters to quickly and effectively protect the population in cases of nuclear, biological, and chemical attacks.
Experts believe that the increase in the number of nuclear tests conducted by the DPRK in recent years has raised the level of danger in the region. Therefore, the South Korean government has prioritized strengthening security infrastructure not only in the military but also in the civilian sector.
The new bunker being built in Seoul is a modern defense project designed to ensure citizens' safety in the new global reality. This facility is the first shelter in the country constructed solely for civilian needs and resistant to the effects of a nuclear explosion.
