For the first time in the history of New York City, a Muslim mayor has been elected. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The Associated Press news agency reported on this. Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani achieved a decisive victory over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
The 34-year-old politician made history not only as the city's youngest leader but also as its first Muslim mayor. During his election campaign, Mamdani promised to implement a number of social and economic reforms.
He focused particularly on controlling housing rental prices, introducing free fares on public transport, and making childcare services more accessible to the public. However, his victory was not received positively by everyone.
Former President Donald Trump opposed Mamdani's win and threatened to cut federal funding to New York in this situation. Trump had called on his supporters to vote for independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
The election was held on November 4. Mamdani confidently won, surpassing independent candidate Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
In one of his speeches, Mamdani criticized the political views of Trump and Cuomo, accusing them of having the same interests and narrow worldview. According to data, New York City receives nearly $7.4 billion annually from the federal government.
This accounts for 6.4 percent of the city's total budget. During his presidency, Donald Trump threatened several times to stop funding for political reasons.
