The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the UN Women entity have released a special report on the occasion of November 25 — the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This report raises serious concerns about cases of violence and killings against women. According to data on femicide (the intentional killing of women) in 2025, 83,000 women and girls were deliberately killed worldwide in 2024.
The report states that every day 137 women, that is every 24 hours, lose their lives at the hands of their husband or close relative. Sixty percent of these killings, more than 50,000, were committed by intimate partners or family members.
For comparison, this figure among men is 11 percent. Gender-based killings are observed in all regions of the world.
The highest rate was recorded in Africa — 3 cases per 100,000 women. Additionally, the numbers are concerning in the Americas (1.5), Oceania (1.4), Asia (0.7), and Europe (0.5).
The UN sharply criticized this issue and called on all countries to take real measures to ensure women's safety. Representatives of the organization emphasize the necessity of serious efforts to ensure gender equality and to stop violence against women.
