Argentina national team captain Lionel Messi visited the country in December this year as part of a three-day tour. On December 12, Messi participated in the unveiling ceremony of a 21-meter statue dedicated to him.
The event was held in a stadium with a capacity of 70,000 people. During the ceremony, Messi was mostly observed via video link and left the stadium after about 20 minutes.
He waved to the stands and signed jerseys for a few selected guests. However, after Messi left the stadium, disorder broke out among the fans.
They threw seats, the podium, and other equipment onto the field. As a result, significant damage was reported to the sports facility.
The incident sparked widespread public debate.
