
Penalties for hunting the snow leopard (snow leopard) and related illegal activities have been increased in Tajikistan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The country's parliament has made amendments to the Criminal Code. This was announced by the official publication of the parliament, "Sadoi mardum."
According to the new edition, Article 232-1 of the Criminal Code is now titled “Hunting, deliberate destruction, as well as illegal acquisition, possession, transfer, or sale of the snow leopard.” Previously, this article only covered cases of hunting and deliberate destruction.
Now, for such violations, a fine ranging from 1200 to 1800 calculation units (117–175 million soms) or imprisonment for up to 3 years is prescribed. Previously, the fine was limited to 800–1200 calculation units (78–117 million soms).
If the crime is committed repeatedly, the penalty is further increased. In such cases, a fine ranging from 2000 to 3000 calculation units (195–292 million soms) or imprisonment from 4 to 8 years will be applied.
Additionally, offenders may be deprived of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain types of activities for up to 5 years. Amendments were also made to Article 236 of the Criminal Code.
Now, in cases of significant damage to specially protected natural areas, the fine can be increased up to 500 calculation units (48.7 million soms). These measures are aimed at protecting the natural environment and preserving unique animal species.
