Romanian President: The decision of Moldovan citizens will be decisive

Romanian President Nikusor Dan expressed a cautious attitude towards the proposal for a referendum on unification with Moldova. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He emphasized that in such a matter, the main and decisive word belongs to the citizens of Moldova. According to the president, currently the level of mass support for unification in Moldovan society is not sufficient.
In his speech in the city of Focșani, Dan noted that Moldova is an independent state and Romania approaches the decisions of its citizens with respect. If in the future public opinion in Moldova changes, Romania will act according to the new circumstances.
According to the president, this issue should be based not on emotions but on the choice of Moldovan citizens. At the same time, Romania specifically emphasized its support for Moldova's desire to join the European Union.
This does not mean "there will be no unification," nor does it mean "cooperation will end." On the contrary, Romania's current main goal is to support Moldova's integration with the European Union and to encourage reforms in the country.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu, in an interview given in Britain, stated that if a referendum on unification is held, she would personally vote in favor of unification with Romania. She explained her decision by the threats coming from Russia and the difficulty of maintaining sovereignty for a small state.
There are also reports that Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Muntyanu supports this view. Currently, Romania does not support the scenario of holding a rapid referendum, but some leaders on the Moldovan side are openly expressing their personal positions.
The main question in the near future is: in which direction will Moldova move faster — discussing the symbolic issue of unification with Romania or accelerating integration with the European Union? In conclusion, the final decision on this matter will be made by Moldovan society.
