Former defender of the Russian national team Yuri Zhirkov expressed his thoughts on the established limit on the number of legionnaires in the Russian Premier League and the possibility of its strengthening. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
He emphasized that teams should prioritize young players during a time when no games are being played anywhere. He stated that if the results in the championship and the Champions League do not exert pressure, it is advisable to give more opportunities to young Russian footballers.
According to Zhirkov, it was revealed during the match between Dynamo and Baltika held on July 18 that there are talented young players with Russian passports, and it is necessary to pay attention to them. According to Premier League rules, each club can include a maximum of 13 foreign players on the roster during the season.
At the same time, only eight legionnaires can be on the field at the same time during a match. These rules serve to develop local young players and strengthen the national composition of the teams.
Therefore, providing more opportunities for young Russian footballers is considered an important factor in improving the quality of the league.
