Former Netherlands national team and Inter Milan player Wesley Sneijder shared his thoughts on the awarding of the Ballon d'Or. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
Recalling events from 15 years ago, he expressed his views during an interview with the Winwin portal about when Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or in 2009. According to Sneijder, that year was very successful for him.
He highlighted that he won the Champions League, reached the World Cup final, and secured two domestic championships, stating that he gave his all. Additionally, Sneijder acknowledged that the Ballon d'Or is not always awarded to truly deserving players.
As an example, he cited the cases of Franck Ribery in 2013 and Robert Lewandowski in 2020. In 2013, the award went to Cristiano Ronaldo, while in 2020, it was not awarded due to the coronavirus pandemic.
For this reason, Sneijder emphasized the importance of fairness and integrity in the awarding process. In his opinion, the genuine efforts and results of players should be taken into account.
