The Russian Minister of Sports, Mikhail Degtyarev, confirmed that restrictions on the number of foreign players in the Russian football championship will be tightened. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
According to him, five foreign players will be allowed on the field at the same time, and the team roster can include ten foreign players. According to the minister, this decision will be implemented gradually, and the document will be signed this year to facilitate planning for club leaders.
Starting from the next season, the restrictions will be gradually reduced. Currently, each club in the Russian Premier League can include 13 foreign players in their squad.
However, a maximum of 8 foreign players can be on the field in a single match. This regulation has been in effect since 2022.
Additionally, according to the current rules, citizens of member states of the Eurasian Economic Union, specifically Armenia, Belarus, Iran, and several other countries, are not considered foreign players. These changes are being made to increase internal competition in Russian football and to create more opportunities for local players.
Officials believe that the new restrictions will allow clubs to plan and develop more sustainably.
