How was Uzbekistan's chance to qualify for the World Cup assessed?
The 7th round matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifying stage in Asia have concluded. On March 20, in a match held in Tashkent, the Uzbekistan national team faced Kyrgyzstan and won 1:0. Following this result, the We Global Football portal assessed the chances of Asian teams to qualify for the World Cup.

According to the assessment results, the Uzbekistan national team, led by Temur Kapadze, has a 92.6 percent chance of qualifying directly from Group A for the 2026 World Cup. In this regard, Uzbekistan ranks fourth after Japan, Iran, and South Korea.

Iran is leading the group

The highest chance in Group A belongs to the Iran national team, which has almost guaranteed a 100 percent chance of qualifying for the World Cup. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, is in second place, on the verge of participating in the world's most prestigious tournament for the first time in history.

After losing to the Iran national team in their last match, the United Arab Emirates' chance of qualifying directly for the World Cup has been assessed at only 6 percent. Qatar's chance is 1.3 percent. Kyrgyzstan and North Korea have effectively lost their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

Allocated quotas for Asian teams

For the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, Asia has been allocated 8.5 quotas. Accordingly, the teams that finish in 1st and 2nd place in three groups will qualify directly for the World Cup. The teams finishing in 3rd and 4th place in the groups will compete in playoff matches for the remaining 2.5 spots.

Current status of the Uzbekistan national team

As of the end of the 7th round, the Uzbekistan national team is in 2nd place in Group A with 16 points. The group leader, Iran, is ahead with 19 points. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar occupy the 3rd and 4th places with 10 points each. Kyrgyzstan (3 points) and North Korea (2 points) are at the bottom of the tournament table.

Upcoming important match

The Uzbekistan national team will face the Iran national team in an important match on March 25 as part of the 8th round of qualifying. The match is scheduled to start at 21:00 Tashkent time. This match could hold historical significance for the Uzbekistan national team, as a victory would almost secure their qualification for the World Cup.
